Depeche Mode photographer Brian Griffin has died

Brian Griffin was responsible for Depeche Mode’s first five album covers.

British photographer Brian Griffin is dead. He died at the age of 75. According to media reports, he died peacefully in his sleep. In the 1980s, Griffin was responsible for many of the cover artworks for Depeche Mode records.

The image, created by Brian Griffin for Depeche Mode’s 1981 work A BROKEN FRAME, is particularly iconic with its ambiguous, bleak depiction of a person in a field. “Time” currently named it “Photo of the Decade.”

In September 2023, Griffin published a photo book about his work for Depeche Mode called “Mode”. Also featured: His covers for the band’s first works – SPEAK & SPELL, A BROKEN FRAME, CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN, SOME GREAT REWARD and BLACK CELEBRATION.

He also provided portraits and album covers for other musicians. According to his own statements, in the 80s he created 200-300 LP artworks for artists such as Iggy Pop, Queen, Kate Bush, John Foxx, Billy Idol and Ultravox.
