So far he has played under a double name. But now Germany has decided to do this new tennis hope Diego Dedura-Palomero: a last name is enough.

On his first big appearance on the ATP tour, a Berlin junior player not only makes headlines in sports. Diego Dedura has won his first round match at the BMW Open in Munich – and will be on the pitch under a new name in the future.

The 17-year-old, previously known under the name Diego Dedura-Palomero, only starts with his mother’s maiden name. “Without the second name it sounds somehow clearer, it is easier for everyone to notice and I have been told that it makes it somehow easier for the media,” said Dedura the “picture”. The change of name is obviously no problem for his father Cesar: “This is okay,” said the teenager.

In terms of sport, Dedura set a clear exclamation mark. The young German showed a strong performance against the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, once in the top ten in the world. At 7: 6 (7: 2) and 3-0 from his point of view, Shapovalov had to give up-Dedura became the first player born in 2008 who won a match in the main field of an ATP tournament.

In the round of 16, the Berliner now meets the Belgian Zizou Berg. The move into the quarter -finals would be the next milestone in a career that just picks up speed.
