Germany’s handball players will face hosts Denmark in the final of the European Championship.

The world champion and Olympic champion won his semi-final against Iceland 31:28 (14:13) in front of 15,000 spectators in the sold-out Jyske Bank Boxen and will play for the title against national coach Alfred Gislason’s team on Sunday (6 p.m./ZDF).

Germany and Denmark had already met in the main round at the same place, with the Danes winning 31:26 (13:12).

Right winger Lukas Zerbe had already said after Germany’s victory against runner-up Croatia in the first semi-final (31:28): “Nobody is unbeatable – not even Denmark.”

But the favorite had a lot of trouble against Iceland. After a quick 3:6 deficit, Denmark took the lead for the first time at 9:8 (19th). But it remained exciting well into the second half before the Danes turned 18:19 into 23:20 (47th) and never relinquished the lead. The hosts’ best thrower was world handball player Mathias Gidsel from Füchse Berlin with seven hits.
