After his winning goal against Ghana, Deniz Undav was interviewed by ARD. Finally, he has a message for the fans in the stadium.

Deniz Undav spoke on ARD about a “perfect evening”. Even before he was substituted on, the national striker was celebrated by the fans in the stadium in the international match against Ghana. Then the national coach brought him to the break – and in the 88th minute he scored the winning goal. “It was amazing to hear how the fans are behind me. I enjoy it,” said Undav on ARD. “It was great for me to come in and score the goal. But the important thing is that we won the game.”

For the 29-year-old it was the fourth goal in his seventh appearance for the national team; at club level he has 36 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions. At the DFB he is only the number three striker behind Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade. “I had a conversation with the national coach, I know my role, but goals can perhaps change my role,” said Undav. “I’m trying to accept my role, keep going, step on the gas and score goals for the team. That’s the most important thing.”

After this statement, ARD reporter Alexander Schlüter actually wanted to end the conversation, but Undav asked him for the microphone again. “I thought it was nice of the fans how they cheered me. Thank you again for that,” said Undav – and then touched on another topic: “But I ask every fan that when Leroy (Sané, editor’s note) or any other player comes in, that they don’t boo. No matter what a player does or what he is like. You should stand behind the team and it is important that we become a unit together with the fans.”

Sané was booed by individual fans in the stadium when he came on as a substitute for Nick Woltemade. Apparently loud enough for the players to hear. “Leroy is as much a part of us as anyone else here and I hope the fans will support him again next time,” added Undav.
