“It is a special day for Den Oever. Fishing is in the DNA here,” says director Martin Schiolten of the Bleu Food Center Wieringen. “A lot is earned from fishing, but not where it lands. That is mainly outside Wieringen. What we want is for even more local and regional entrepreneurs and small businesses to benefit indirectly from fishing.”
Buy fish, drink coffee and eat cake
The Blue Food Center works as much as possible with so-called short chains; the fresh fish of the day preferably from board straight to the platewithout the intervention of traders. Scholten: “Exactly the way it used to be.” Scholten also wants to pass this on to future visitors, especially tourists.
“When you are on holiday, you look for the fishing port. People like that. Well, that is around the corner. Hopefully those tourists will also drink some coffee and eat cake. Until now, the road to Den Oever was still relatively unknown. That will hopefully change now.”
