Small-scale and sustainable fishing is important to Blue Food Wieringen. Director Martin Scholten: “Short chains, so we deliver fish and immediately send them to the processor here and to the customer on the fresh market.”
“We are responding to the demand for North Sea fish, especially special species such as cod, whiting, shellfish and crabs. Previously this may have been by-catch for the fishermen, but for the consumer it is worth more than a shrimp.”
Don’t expect any big bangers from us
“The first contacts have already been made when we start in March. We expect that this will prompt several fishermen to supply fish. It will still be scarce in the beginning. Don’t expect any big hits from us.”
Scholten also hopes and expects that the center will make an important contribution to the quality of life in the village. The first signs are already there: “A lively fishing port is good for the village. We show tourists and interested parties where the fish comes from and who the fishermen are.”
“The Wieringer shrimp croquettes are already internationally popular. A lounge bar will soon be converted into a seafood bar. That makes me happy.”
