To get all residents with the plans was quite a task, says Catharina Klandermans of Stadgenoot. All 200 homes in the neighborhood next to the Amstel station were rented by Stadgenoot. “Some people have lived here all their lives,” says Klandersmans. All residents have since moved, and whoever wants can return.

Klandermans: “There will soon be 765 homes here, 400 of which are social rent, a doubling.” The remaining 365 houses are middle rental and owner-occupied homes.

The intention is that hospitality will also come close. “This way the neighborhood gets a little more connection to the Amstelstation,” says Klandermans. It must also ensure that the neighborhood feels more lively. In the old design, stone walls and small windows determined the streets. That made for an unsafe feeling on the street.

The demolition must be completed at the end of this year. The new construction will start in the autumn of 2026.
