Defeat against Wiesbaden: Tired Düsseldorfers disappoint at home

As of: November 3rd, 2023 8:29 p.m

Fortuna Düsseldorf has exciting days behind it. The fantastic comeback against Kaiserslautern, a three-pointer against Braunschweig – and then the victory in the cup after extra time against Unterhaching. That was obviously a bit too much, because now there was a 1:3 (0:3) home defeat against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the 2nd Bundesliga in front of 30,000 spectators.

Fortuna, who could have taken over the top of the table with a win and some help, were often not up to speed despite their visual superiority – often a step too late and vulnerable at the back.

In addition, center forward Vincent Vermeij had to be replaced injured after just seven minutes.

Penalty kick to make it 3-0 for Wiesbaden is repeated

And so Hyun-ju Lee hit the Düsseldorf goal after just nine minutes. Fortuna also had a few chances, for example through Christos Tzolis or Jona Niemiec. But the goals came on the other side.

First Amar Catic made it 2-0 (26th minute), then John Iredale increased the score with a penalty kick (42nd). The latter was repeated because some Fortunes had run into the penalty area too early. Bad luck for Düsseldorf – Iredale hit the post with the first penalty.

This time there is no Düsseldorf catching up

Unlike the 4-3 win against Kaiserslautern, when Fortuna turned a 3-0 deficit into a celebrated victory, there was no similarly grand comeback this time.

Although the Düsseldorf team came out of the locker room with momentum, they still lacked precision, meaning the guests were able to easily defend their lead for a long time.

Wehen Wiesbaden defends strongly

Only in the final phase did things get a little exciting again. Yannik Engelhardt rewarded Düsseldorf’s efforts with the 1:3 (79th).

But it wasn’t enough for another show of strength. Düsseldorf was not in a position to do that that evening. And on the other hand, Wehen Wiesbaden defended too cleverly.
