AUDIO: Hansa Rostock loses to Viktoria Köln (1 min)
As of: April 4, 2026 3:59 p.m
Hansa Rostock’s ambitions for promotion have received a major setback. The third division football team surprisingly lost 2:3 (0:2) against Viktoria Köln on Saturday.
After recent strong performances, coach Daniel Brinkmann’s team suffered an unexpected defeat against the Rhinelanders, who had previously lost four times in a row. A lot is still possible in the tight promotion race, but Hansa’s gap to third division leaders VfL Osnabrück (4-0 against Schweinfurt) is already eleven points.
As in the magnificent 5-1 win against MSV Duisburg, Hansa wanted to restrict the opponent straight away and take the lead as early as possible. A lot of things went through Maximilian Krauß on the left side. And the 29-year-old almost made it 1-0 after five minutes. Viktoria keeper Arne Schulz skillfully parried his shot.
Rostock remained in command and clearly had possession of the ball. However, Cologne adjusted better defensively and only allowed a little. However, there was hardly anything to be seen offensively from the Rhinelanders – until the 29th minute: Yannick Tonye broke through on the right, Hansa couldn’t clear, so Leonhard Münst was able to push in to give the guests a surprising lead.
Three chances, three goals: Cologne efficient
The people of Cologne were efficient – and remained so, to the chagrin of the hosts. In the 41st minute, Simon Handle sent a perfect cross in front of the goal, David Otto rose up and headed it in from three meters, completely unchallenged, to make it 2-0. Very few people probably expected the game to turn out this way.
There were long faces in the Ostseestadion, but of course there was still hope for a turnaround. But only until the 54th minute: Once again the Rostock defense was too careless, Tonye finished from seven meters and sank the ball into the box to make it 3-0.
It will be exciting again
Things looked bitter for Hansa. However, the Mecklenburgers could not be denied their will and commitment. They mobilized all their strength once again.
But neither Adrien Lebeau (68′) nor Christian Kinsombi (73′) got the ball over the line when they had great chances. David Hummel did better, making it 1:3 (81′) and releasing energy once again. Hansa ran wildly, got shots, but was only able to get a goal from Andreas Voglsammer in stoppage time. Things continue for Hansa on Wednesday, when the game at SC Verl (7 p.m.) is on the schedule.
