Dedecker sees fifteen Flemish regions as “harbingers for forced mergers between municipalities”

Jean-Marie Dedecker, mayor of Middelkerke, is not thrilled about the fifteen new Flemish regions that were approved by parliament yesterday. They form an administrative layer between municipalities and provinces. They mainly serve for partnerships such as the police, fire brigade, but also libraries, waste collection and swimming pools, for example. “I feel this is the harbinger of forced mergers,” says Dedecker about the regions at HLN LIVE. “That is a different discussion,” replies competent Flemish minister Bart Somers (Open Vld) in the studio.
