End of season for Maxim Gullit. The native of Amsterdam, son of Ruud Gullit and great-nephew of Johan Cruijff, injured his knee last weekend and will have to rehabilitate for a long time. His club SC Cambuur reports today that the defender has to undergo surgery.

Gullit left AZ last summer for an adventure in Friesland. The 20-year-old Gullit has so far come in seven times for Cambuur, but it has not yet come to a basic place. Gullit played more than fifty matches for Jong AZ in Alkmaar.

Substitute

Gullit came on Saturday in the extra time of the home game against Fortuna for Doke Schmidt, who had broken his nose. In a collision with Cambuur goalkeeper Sonny Stevens, things went wrong for Gullit. The defender had to go off the field on a stretcher.

After the 2-1 win, Cambuur trainer Henk de Jong suspected that Gullit had torn his knee ligament. “Very annoying, because that boy is training well. He was really coming and then this happens to him. I really hate that,” said De Jong against ESPN
