December starts colder than usual: this is now the chance of a white Christmas

In the first half of December it will probably be colder and drier than normal, Weeronline reports. “However, real winter cold with snow fun and ice fun is probably not possible,” says meteorologist Jaco van Wezel, who also looks ahead to the Christmas period.

On average at the beginning of December it is about 7 degrees during the day and about 2 degrees at night. The expectation now shows maximums of 2-4 degrees on most days and light frost in the nights. An easterly wind brings quite cold air, but real winter cold will not reach our country. The moderate east wind causes feeling temperatures of -2 to -5 degrees. When it clears up at night, the mercury can drop to -5.

At the beginning of December it is often cloudy. “Due to the gray weather, the dark days before Christmas come early. The chance of precipitation is small, but a little rain or wet snow is possible every now and then,” says Van Wezel.

Christmas

The forecasts for Christmas, in just over three weeks, are still uncertain. The rather cold weather of early December is likely to dissipate. “Statistically, the chance of a white Christmas is only seven percent. But it doesn’t seem to be buttery soft this year, so snow lovers can still hold out hope for Christmas,” says Van Wezel, who warns that the expectation is still uncertain. “For a white Christmas, it must be a bit colder than normal at exactly the right time and then there must also be some precipitation.”
