On the 1st Mondays in June and December, the government sends out an NL-Alert test message around noon. More than three-quarters of the Dutch people who receive the test message also recognize NL-Alert in the event of an emergency. This is the conclusion of a study carried out on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Security. The test message clearly states that it is a test. So you don’t have to do anything. The test message looks like this:

NL-Alert 05-12-2022 12.00: TEST MESSAGE. The government warns you during emergency situations via NL-Alert. You can read what to do and where you can find more information. Visit www.nl-alert.nl *** TEST MESSAGE Netherlands Government Public Warning System. No action required. More information: www.nl-alert.nl/english”

Please note: the NL-Alert can sound loud if you use earplugs or headphones.

Immediate information in the event of an emergency

The alarm device NL-Alert warns and informs you when you are in the vicinity of an emergency. Think of a major fire or unexpected storm. An NL-Alert always states what is going on, what you should do and where you can find more information. Do you receive an NL-Alert? Read the message immediately, take action and inform others.

This is how NL-Alert works

You will receive NL-Alert on your mobile phone. If you receive an NL-Alert, you will hear a penetrating alarm sound. This sounds different than a normal message. To receive NL-Alert, your mobile must be switched on. You don’t have to set anything else. NL-Alert is free and anonymous, your telephone number remains unknown. You will also receive NL-Alert if the mobile network is overloaded. In addition, NL-Alert can be seen on more and more digital advertising screens and travel information screens in public transport.

Next test message

With the NL-Alert test message you can experience what an NL-Alert sounds and looks like. You will receive the next NL-Alert test message on Monday 5 June 2023 around 12:00.
