Decathlon: Niklas Kaul starts wide awake in the second decathlon day

As of: 07/24/2022 8:01 p.m

Defending champion Niklas Kaul started his race to catch up at the beginning of the second decathlon day: He ran a personal best over 110 m hurdles. But the top favorites were even faster. The best DLV athlete is World Cup debutant Leo Neugebauer.

The 24-year-old Mainzer Kaul was in 16th place after a decent first day for him – with 100 m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 m. More importantly, he was just 17 points off his intermediate mark from the 2019 triumph in Doha. After 14.27 seconds over 110 m hurdles, he currently has 5,087 points on the account, which makes 15th place as an interim result. After the retirement of Olympic champion Damian Warner from Canada, who injured himself in the lead in the 400m, there are currently 20 athletes left in the competition.

Owens-Delerme still at the top

Ayden Owens-Delerme from Puerto Rico (5,596) is still surprisingly in the lead – he needed 13.88 seconds for the 110 m hurdles. Canada’s Pierce Lepage (5,488), who ran the best hurdle time of 13.78, is second, followed by Zach Ziemek of the USA (5,384) in third. Experience has shown that world record holder Kevin Mayer from France, like Kaul, copes better on the second day of the decathlon. After the hurdle sprint in the best time of the season (13.92 seconds), he is still fifth with 5,357 points.

The best German, who came eleventh but is no longer in the top ten, is Leo Neugebauer from LG Leinfelden-Echterdingen (5,165) in his World Cup debut. Kai Kazmirek from the LG Rhein-Wied, who completed the competition ailing, is in 15th place with 5,085 points, Tim Nowak from Ulm is at the end of the field (4,849). None of the three reached their best time in the 110 m hurdles.

This is how the decathlon goes

The seventh discipline of the decathletes is the discus throw, which is currently taking place in two groups. Then it’s off to the pole vault (9:15/10:15 p.m. CEST).
