Debutant Nigel de Jong helps ex-internationals to New Year’s victory

It turned out to be a debut not to be forgotten. Nigel de Jong played for the first time on Saturday afternoon in the traditional New Year’s match for former players of the Dutch team. The director of top football at the KNVB scored a goal and that made it 5-3 for the ex-internationals.

Remarkably, Gerald Sibon, who never played for the Dutch national team, was important with two goals. However, the former striker of Ajax, among others, was called up by Foppe de Haan for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. There he played four matches and scored two goals.

Glenn Helder and Denny Landzaat scored the other goals for the former players of the Dutch national team and the goal-rich victory: 5-3. Reactions and a summary of this competition can be seen later on our site.

The female former internationals also had a wonderful afternoon. They were too strong for the Royal Haarlem All Stars (a combination of players from the Haarlem region) 2-1. Claudia van den Heiligenberg and Marjan Brouwer scored the goals.
