FC Bayern Women suffered a bitter 7-1 defeat at the start of the Champions League. Klara Bühl, Lea Schüller and Co. have no chance against the top-class FC Barcelona.

FC Bayern Women started the Champions League with a bitter 7-1 defeat. Klara Bühl, Lea Schüller and Co. had no chance against last year’s finalists from FC Barcelona. Alexia (4th), Ewa Pajor (12th, 56th), Esmee Brugts (27th), Salma Paralluelo (45th+1) and Claudia Pina (88th, 90th+2) illustrated the major deficits of the German champions on the international stage. Klara Bühl (32nd) only managed to make up for the result with a goal.

Particularly bitter: Carolin Simon was injured in the tough fight against the superior Spaniards. The left-back went down during a sprint and grabbed the back of her leg. She left the field in tears – if Simon were injured, that would be the next bitter loss alongside Vanessa Gilles, Jovana Damnjanovic and others.

FCB in the Champions League: Big goals, bitter reality

Bayern’s new coach José Barcala promised when he took office: FCB will win the Champions League in the next few years. However, how far the road to victory in the premier class still is, and how big the difference in performance compared to the major international clubs, became clear on Tuesday evening: against the Spanish series champions, the Munich team conceded four goals in the first half alone.

What was fatal was a bad pass from Klara Bühl, who is actually known for her accurate crosses and assists. The Munich player played the ball into the center a few minutes after kick-off – but the ball landed at Alexia, who gave FCB keeper Ena Mahmutovic no chance with a sharp shot.

Schüller’s goal didn’t count, Pina scored a brace

The early goal conceded in the 4th minute set the tone for the game: Ewa Pajor and Esmee Brugts increased the score to 0:3 within the first half hour. Only Klara Bühl was able to make up for her XXL mistake at the start of the game and reduce the score to 1:3 in the 32nd minute – this time the Munich team benefited from a bad pass from the otherwise outstanding Arianna Caruso. The last goal in the first half was scored by Salma Paralluelo.

Something similar continued after the half-time break: Schüller wanted to start energetically and pulled the ball past FC Barcelona keeper Cata Coll, but shortly after the goal the flag went up – and the VAR check also confirmed the offside. Instead of turning the game around, the Munich team had to keep watching and let themselves be annoyed: Pina scored a brace in the last five minutes of the game.
