The German ice hockey women managed to stay up in the league at the World Cup in Denmark with a goal in the last second.
Tanja Eisenschmid scored the winning goal against the hosts after 59:59 minutes to make it 3:2 (1:1, 0:1, 2:0) for the team of national coach Thomas Schädler. If the last group game had gone into overtime, the German team would have had to go into the second-rate Division IA for the first time since 2015.
With the three points for victory after 60 minutes, Germany still passed Denmark in the table and finished Group B of five with four points in fourth place. The quarter-finals were already out of reach before the game.
Franziska Feldmeier (9th) initially equalized in the exciting match in Frederikshavn to 1:1, five minutes before the end the German team was still 1:2 behind. The repeated equalization by Laura Kluge (56th) provided new hope, Eisenschmid completed the small ice hockey miracle.
The German selection had already missed the hoped-for quarter-finals in Denmark due to defeats against Hungary (2:4), Sweden (3:4 after a penalty shoot-out) and the Czech Republic (0:6).
