The evidentiary incident is underway in Bolzano: manslaughter hypothesis. The family: “Trust in the Prosecutor’s Office”
One year after the tragedy that struck Matilde Lorenzi, the nineteen-year-old Italian super-G champion who died on 28 October 2024 while training on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales, there are two suspects. The Bolzano Prosecutor’s Office which, in a note, underlines that those registered in the register of suspects are “the person responsible for safety on the ski slopes and ski lifts of the `Alpin Arena Senales´ ski area and the coach and trainer of the giant slalom training slope called Grawand G1, on which Matilde Lorenzi was training”.

The note adds that “the entire file of the Fisi Federal Prosecutor’s Office was also acquired, concluded with a dismissal order due to the absence of unsportsmanlike conduct by Fisi members on the occasion of the tragic event that struck the athlete Matilde Lorenzi”. The Prosecutor’s Office “confirms that the proceedings had already become known in February 2025, after the filing of a statement produced by the offended parties (the family of the young skier, ed) with two consultancies attached (one medical-legal, according to which, in light of the health documentation already acquired, “the skier’s death was not caused by the fall along the track but by the subsequent impact against the raised edge of the slope” and one relating to any omitted safety measures that would have prevented the event from occurring) and the video recording of the dynamics of the accident”.

The evidentiary incident has also begun, requested by the Prosecutor’s Office, in the cross-examination of all the parties with the relevant consultants, with two experts appointed by the investigating judge to “verify whether the cause of death is to be determined following the first initial fall of the athlete along the track or from the subsequent impact against the edge of the track; as well as to ascertain any negligent profiles in relation to the failure to remove the curb at the edge of the track or in any case the failure to prepare safety measures that could have avoided the event”, he concludes the Prosecutor’s Office.
the words of the Lorenzos
—
The Lorenzis announced yesterday that “the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Bolzano has accepted our requests and has given impetus to a criminal proceeding, currently pending, in which an evidentiary incident is underway which will lead to the reconstruction, both from a dynamic and medical point of view, of the causes of the tragedy that has affected all of us. We consider this step a duty towards our Matilde so that her sacrifice can be useful in the future for the safety of the many athletes who, like her, train on the ski slopes”. Initially the judiciary had considered the slope to be in order, had not found any crimes, nor had an autopsy been carried out on the body of the skier who fell almost at the end of the slope with her skis spread apart which caused the tragic impact with the ground (chest compression was fatal). The Lorenzis now underline that they trust “in the work of the magistrates and experts appointed by the Court and we are confident that they will be able to correctly reconstruct what happened, identifying whether there were deficiencies in the security and/or prevention measures. Precisely for this reason and for respect in the work of the institutions, we believe it is appropriate and correct not to comment further on the procedural matter on which we will not make further statements while awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigations”.
