When SG Flensburg-Handewitt wins the European League, handball takes a back seat. A fan dies.
A spectator died on Tuesday evening during the main round game between SG Flensburg-Handewitt and Montpellier HB in the European League. As the club announced, there was a medical emergency in the hall. “Unfortunately, all measures taken were unsuccessful.”
SG managing director Holger Glandorf said: “Our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the deceased in these difficult hours. Handball and everything sporting is taking a back seat today.”
In terms of sport, the defending champion secured their first victory in the main round group 1. Only in the last quarter did Flensburg clearly pull away. When the score was 33:31 in the 49th minute, goalkeeper Benjamin Buric blocked a seven-meter shot from Benjamin Richert. In the next attack, Niclas Kirkelökke increased the score to 34:31. The decision was made with another save by Buric against Valentin Porte at 38:35 in the 57th minute. The second leg takes place next Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. in the south of France.
