The dead fish were found along the beach at the Kooizandweg. A walker quickly pulls his dog away when he gets ready to eat a few fish. It is about Possen, a kind of freshwater fish. Not only the beach is full, but also many dead fish are still floating in the surf.
At first glance a strange sensation, but according to the Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson there is nothing wrong. “It’s a natural phenomenon,” he explains. “It is now Easter time for the fish. Because spawning costs a lot of energy, the weak fish die.”
Swimming between dead fish
While the dead fish drove into the water, bathers just took a refreshing dip, a reporter reported on the spot. Incidentally, the phenomenon is not new.
A year ago, many dead fish were also found along the coast near Enkhuizen. “That too was in the Paaitijd,” says the spokesperson. “The fish that lie along the coast are poses, but you can also see this at carp and bream.”
Last year the same happened in the Trintelhaven at the Markerwaarddijk (Dijk Enkhuizen-Lelystad). “It depends on the current where the fish ultimately wash up,” said the spokesperson.
The municipality of Enkhuizen says that the fish have since been cleaned up by Holiday Park Europarcs, the manager of the beach.
