The Hurricane Festival 2026 has been overshadowed by a death. A 41-year-old visitor died on Saturday (June 21) on the festival site at Eichenring in Scheeßel. As the “district newspaper” reported, the woman, in the presence of rescue workers, found herself in a situation that required immediate resuscitation. However, attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.
According to Niklas Lübbe from the medical service, the deceased presumably suffered from previous illnesses. There was no connection between her health and the festival events. Further details about the cause of death were initially not known.
Accompanying persons received support
Emergency pastors looked after the 41-year-old’s companions after the tragic incident. According to the “Kreizeitung”, some of them were able to be accommodated away from festival operations with the help of the local church community in Scheeßel.
At the final press conference on Sunday, the organizers, community and authorities spoke about the weekend’s safety and operational performance. Stephan Thanscheidt from the organizer FKP Scorpio explained that the death of the visitor overshadowed the otherwise positive conclusion. Overall, the number of medical treatments was in the average range. People with circulatory problems were particularly often treated. The number of referrals to hospitals was even lower than in previous years. Before the festival weekend, high temperatures and possible thunderstorms were particularly worrying. However, according to those responsible, there were no major weather-related health effects.
30 years of Hurricane
The Hurricane took place in Scheeßel from June 19th to 21st and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026. Around 78,000 visitors were expected to attend the three-day festival. More than 90 performances from rock, pop, alternative, indie, hip-hop and electro were on the program. The big names in the anniversary line-up included Kraftklub, The Offspring, Florence + The Machine, Twenty One Pilots, Halsey and Billy Talent.
The festival has been taking place at Eichenring since 1997 and is now one of the largest open-air events in Germany. Around 20,000 people came to Scheeßel for the first edition. Over the years, the weekend has developed into a fixed date in the German festival summer.
