“Dealer”, “Ground” and “Beau Séjour 2” big winners of Flemish film awards

The winners were announced on Saturday evening during a live show, which can be followed via the channels of Focus and WTV. In total, Ensors were awarded in 22 categories. “Dealer” won no fewer than nine Ensors and the audience award. The “Beau Séjour 2” and “Ground” series each produced three Ensors. They were the big winners of the evening.

“Dealer”, written and directed by Jeroen Perceval, was able to win nine of the fourteen nominations: best picture, best screenplay, music (Stan Lee Cole), sound, make-up, art direction, director of photography and best supporting role in a film, for Bart Hollanders. The film also won the Telenet audience award.

“Dealer” is about Johnny (Sverre Rous), a 14-year-old drug dealer who wants a better life. After an acquaintance with the well-known actor Anthony (an unrecognizable Ben Segers), a special bond develops between the two.

Best Director for a TV Series was for “Beau Séjour 2”, as well as Best Editing and Best Costume. “Ground”, by directors Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah and Mathieu Mortelmans, was awarded the Ensors for best TV series, best screenplay and best acting performance in a leading role, for Yassine Ouaich. In addition, “Red Light” was also awarded: Geert Van Rampelberg won the Ensor for best acting performance in a supporting role (TV series).

Otto-Jan Ham also picks up price

“Hi My Name Is Jonny Polonsky” by Otto-Jan Ham and Sjoerd Tanghe and “The Life In Color” by Karine Claassen and Karel Van Mileghem were the winners in the categories documentary film and documentary television. The Ensor for best youth film went to “My father is a saucisse” and the Ensor for animation film went to “Mister Papier”. “Binge Loving” by Thomas Deknop received an Ensor for best short film on Friday.

The Ghent boxing drama “Cool Abdoul” did not go home with empty boxing gloves either. Nabil Mallat won the Ensor for Best Acting Performance in a Leading Role (film). The film tells the true story of the Ghent boxing champion Ismaïl “Cool Abdoul” Abdoul, who went astray in the nightlife and ended up in prison. “I have not prepared a speech,” said an emotional Mallat. “I want to dedicate this award to my late father. Thank you all, really.”
