The house fire on Loderstraat in Eindhoven, in which a fifty-year-old man died on Sunday, made a deep impression on local residents. Several local residents saw the victim unable to move. “I woke up a few times during the night and thought about the fire.”

Blackened walls and window frames and a police car keeping watch. These are the remains of a devastating house fire on Loderstraat in Eindhoven last Sunday afternoon.

A fifty-year-old man died in the fire. “He was leaning out of the window and gasping for breath when the fire brigade arrived on the scene. You couldn’t see it well at first because of all the smoke. It looked like a movie,” says Steven Koster, who lives a few doors away.

“I saw four fire trucks, police, ambulance and a lot of smoke. Then I thought: ‘things are wrong.'”

Steven was allowed to stay in his home, but his neighbors’ house had to be evacuated. “I had already packed the cat basket and a folder with important papers just in case. You never know.”

The events have an impact on Steven and his aunt Nelly Koster, who had just returned from shopping when she heard the sirens: “I saw four fire trucks, police, ambulance and a lot of smoke. Then I thought: ‘things wrong’,” says Nelly .

“When the victim was brought out under a white sheet, everyone fell silent.”

It was also a shock again for Jaoud from the adjacent Sprenger van Eycklaan. In September he had to leave home with his parents and brother due to a fire in the neighbor’s home.

And a few months later, about fifty meters further on, something goes wrong again. “We heard sirens and saw a lot of emergency services again,” he says. “Everyone was talking to each other. When the victim was brought out on a stretcher under a white sheet, everyone fell silent. What happened is very sad.”

The police are investigating the cause of the fire. Fifteen houses were evacuated on Sunday. Woonbedrijf, owner of the houses, has announced that two residents cannot yet return to their own homes. The other residents can return home.
