The identity of the woman who was found in the Wessem-Nederweert canal at the end of September is finally known after eight months of investigation. It concerns a 57-year-old woman from Solingen, Germany.
The woman was found in the water on the Wessemerdijk on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 after a skipper had seen the body and raised the alarm.

She is believed to have died as a result of a crime. It is not clear how long she was in the water. Because there is no strong current locally, the police suspect that she was left behind between the canal four-way junction in Nederweert and the Kelperbrug.
Identify
Police had a hard time establishing the woman’s identity. That is why attention was paid to women in Opsporing Verzocht, the Belgian crime program Faroek and the German Aktenzeichen XY.

The investigation gained momentum when the 57-year-old woman was reported missing in Germany on April 12. After that, the two cases quickly came together and the identity of the found woman could be confirmed with additional research.
Research
The Public Prosecution Service Wuppertal and the mordkommission of the Wuppertal police were subsequently involved in the investigation by the Limburg police. It is not yet known what caused the woman to die. The police investigation continues.
The next of kin of the woman have since been informed of her death.
