Dead woman (58) in residential care center: suspect (55) remains free

The 55-year-old man from Reusel, who was detained for a week after the death of a woman in a residential care center for the elderly in Eindhoven, remains at large. This was decided by the criminal council chamber at the court in Den Bosch. The decision rejects the appeal that the Public Prosecution Service (OM) had filed against the decision to no longer detain the man. The 58-year-old woman was found on December 22. She regularly visited the man.

Due to the court’s decision, the man can await trial in freedom, according to a spokesperson for the court in Den Bosch. According to her, there are insufficient serious indications of the man’s involvement in the woman’s death. The Public Prosecution Service thinks differently and continues its investigation into the circumstances under which the woman died. The man’s house had already been searched in connection with this.

The police were reported around four o’clock in the afternoon on the Friday before Christmas that something was wrong with the woman. She stayed in Vitalis Berckelhof, the residential care center for the elderly on Generaal Cronjéstraat in Eindhoven. Caregivers were unable to contact her. When officers entered, they found her dead.

Domestic violence
Soon after, the 55-year-old man was arrested in the same apartment complex. The man from Reusel turned out to have also been arrested a day earlier, Thursday, December 21. Then on suspicion of domestic violence. He allegedly assaulted the woman, who regularly stayed with him, during an argument.

The woman is said to have suffered bruises, but she did not report the incident. However, the case was still investigated by the police. The man denied the assault and was not arrested at the time.

A day later, the woman was found dead on the balcony of her apartment. Based on the investigation, the police assume that the woman died from complications as a result of the assault the day before. It does not yet appear that the suspect was with the woman a day later, the day she was found dead.
