The fatal victim of the fire in a house on the Zuiderdiep in Valthermond is a 34-year-old man from the village. That is what the police announce.

Around half past seven Monday evening a fire broke out in the house. Soon the flames hit the house. “Possibly the fire was created by an explosion that preceded this,” the police said.

Several explosions in the home followed. As a result, the fire brigade and the police could not go into the house for a long time. Local residents say they have seen flares during the fire.

A second victim, a man of 35 from Emmen, was slightly injured and was arrested. His role and involvement in the fire are still being investigated, the police say.

According to the municipality, local residents can go back to their house today. They have spent the past two nights in hotels. The Explosives Clearance Service Defense, however, is still investigating today in the burned -down home. According to a municipal employee, the EOD has exploded something on a field nearby.

Yesterday, nobody was allowed to come close to the house, but also at four adjacent houses. The street was closed off over a distance of about thirty meters. Even today, the police investigation will continue in and around the house.
