The Rutronik Stars Keltern basketball players have taken the first step towards the German championship. They narrowly won the first game of the final series against Marburg.
The Rutronik Stars Keltern won the first game of the final series against BC Marburg with 69:65 (41:36). This means that coach Matea Tavic’s team takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five final series. In front of the home crowd, star guard Alexandra Wilke in particular played herself into a frenzy. She contributed 16 points to her team’s success.
Exciting first half ends with a close call Wine tour
Right from the start of the game, the Marburgers kept up well with the first team in the main round from Keltern. Although the hosts took the lead, they didn’t pull away decisively. Through physical defense and a concentrated offensive performance, Keltern still forced a deserved 25:14 lead after the first quarter.
In the second half of the game, the Marburg women showed even more that they deserved to be in the final. The “Blue Dolphins”, as the BC Marburg basketball players call themselves, were temporarily behind by 17 points. But they showed morale, started an 11-0 run and won the quarter 22:16 thanks to top scorer Greta Kampschroeder. Overall, the halftime score was 41:36 for the defending champions from Keltern.
Away win for Marburg was within reach
The second half started with probably the wildest phase of the game. Both teams closed quickly, the game became hectic and Marburg took over the momentum from the stars. The team from Hesse continued to reduce their lead. Two minutes before the final buzzer, Caitlyn Jones brought the Blue Dolphins within one point of Keltern with a remarkable three-pointer. The away win seemed tangible at that moment. But the hostesses recovered themselves. The score went into the last quarter break at 60:53.
In the last quarter, the Marburg women left too much behind the basket. Coach José Araújo’s team left too much on the table, especially from the free throw line. Keltern took the lead over time in a highly tense final phase. The Stars ultimately won the game 69:65.
The series continues on Sunday (April 26th, 4:00 p.m.). This game also takes place in wine presses. The series then moves to Marburg for the third game on Wednesday.
