David Bowie announces release date for ‘Moonage Daydream’ documentary

The release date for the David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” is now known: The film is scheduled to be shown in cinemas worldwide on September 16th. There will also be IMAX screenings in several countries.

Exclusive footage

Directed by Brett Morgen, the film is described as a “full-length cinematic odyssey” that explores “Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey.” The documentary includes exclusive footage: Supported by performances and music, the film is accompanied by Bowie’s narration: “’Moonage Daydream’ illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie, one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time. The feature film features the acclaimed icon as the narrator and features 48 music tracks.

Director Brett Morgen gets “unfiltered access” to Bowie’s life

Brett Morgen previously directed Montage of Heck (2015), the documentary about Kurt Cobain. It was reported back in November that he had been working on a film project for four years and amassed thousands of hours of Bowie archive footage, much of it never seen before. According to the press release, Morgen was “gained unfiltered access to Bowie’s personal archives, including all master recordings, to create an artistic and life-affirming film that takes viewers on a journey through Bowie’s creative life.” “Moonage Daydream” is intended to be a project that combines several disciplines: music, film, dance, painting, sculpture, drama and video and audio collage.

Official and approved

Unlike the Bowie biopic Stardust (2020), which did not receive permission to use Bowie’s music, Moonage Daydream has been sanctioned by the Bowie estate. Bowie’s longtime collaborator and producer Tony Visconti was responsible for the music. He collaborated on the project with Academy Award-winning recording engineer Paul Massey, David Gimmarco, the sound design team of John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone, and VFX producer Stefan Nadelman.
