Depeche Mode are considered synth-pop pioneers — and synthesizers are known to require electricity. Nevertheless, a journalist had an interesting question ready at the press conference in Berlin on October 4, 2022: Will the band also be heard in the unplugged setting? Dave Gahan in particular had an equally humorous and unequivocal answer.
Gahan: “Because we are an electronic band”.
No, Depeche Mode will definitely not be heard in the unplugged setting. Gahan answered the reason succinctly with the words: “Because we are an electronic band”. Martin Gore followed suit just as wittily — and said: “Maybe we could try it with battery packs”.
The two musicians caused a lot of laughter in the hall. In reality, the unplugged option wouldn’t be that unrealistic, after all, Gore often used the acoustic guitar at Depeche Mode concerts in the past – and there are also pieces with piano accompaniment from time to time.
Tour and new album
Well, there won’t be an unplugged tour – but there will be a world tour on the occasion of the album “Memento Mori”, which will be released in spring 2022. This starts at the end of March and includes eight performances in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. From May 26th to July 21st there will be performances in Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Bern, Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and Klagenfurt.
