Seeing this clip under today’s circumstances is currently tearing the hearts of many fans: A clip that ultimately didn’t make it into the documentary “Back and Forth”, but has been on the internet for some time, shows the band at one of their acoustic shows for the release of the double album “In Your Honor”. They perform “On the Mend,” a song Dave Grohl says he wrote for his best friend Taylor Hawkins while he was in a coma from a heroin overdose.

The Backstory to On the Mend

“I don’t know if Taylor knows that. There’s a song on the acoustic record called ‘On the Mend’ that I wrote while he was in a coma from an overdose and it’s about Taylor. I never told him it was about him. Hell no, it’s my love song to a dying best friend. I put it on the record and I was like, ‘Oh god, he probably thinks it’s about him,’ but we never even got close to having a conversation like that. I don’t want to talk to him about it, I want to talk to him about other shit.”

From the same documentary comes another clip in which Taylor Hawkins talks about the circumstances that brought him to the hospital in 2001. He has found through the tragic moment in his life that a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, which is about dark and tormented trying to fit a certain stereotype, is a “bunch of shit”. As a drummer you have to be an athlete, eat well, take care of yourself, which is why he hasn’t led a clichéd rock star life ever since.

The lyrics to “On the Mend” by the Foo Fighters

One more day that I’ve survived
Another night alone
Pay no mind I’m doing fine
I’m breathing on my own
I’m here
And I’m on the mend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend my friend
Wake me when the hour arrives
Wake me with my name
See you somewhere down the line
We’re tethered once again
I’m here
And I’m on the mend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend my friend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend my friend
What is it you?
Sat alone
Here we go
Close and stay a while
To take me where you go
Single file we walk the mile
Who’s wandering back home
I’m here
And I’m on the mend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend my friend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend
I’m here
And I’m on the mend my friend
What is it you?
Sat alone
Here we go
Here we go
Here we go
Here we go
