Former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese lashes out violently against his former bandmate Eddie Vedder. In a Facebook post, the musician remembers his last concert with the grunge band from Seattle. On April 17, 1994 he played with Pearl Jam Paramount Theater in New York City – he was fired shortly afterwards.
Abbruzzese writes: “My last concert with Pearl Jam. Eddie knew it was my last. As far as I know, no one else knew, but Eddie knew.” It was a special fan club concert, and that’s why what happened next hurts him to this day: “The fact that he didn’t give me the opportunity to say thank you and say goodbye to the people in the audience is one of the cruelest things a person has ever done to me.” Then he writes: “But I survived.”

A conversation with fans then developed under his post. When asked when he last spoke to Vedder, Abbruzzese replied: “Months later, outside, after a Chris Cornell show. The other guys called me after I got fired. Ed never called me.” Instead, Vedder only reacted once – by yelling at Abbruzzese’s girlfriend at the time because he attended a book signing in New York that had already been agreed to despite being kicked out. “He called and yelled at my girlfriend because I did an in-store promo in New York anyway,” Abbruzzese writes. Vedder was outraged that the drummer showed up: “He was irritated at how I dared to ‘show my face in public’ after my release.”
Finally, another user commented that after 30 years we should let bygones be bygones. Abbruzzese responded with slight annoyance: “You still have a lot of growing up ahead of you – that much is obvious in this comment.” In any case, the drummer isn’t really forgiving. When asked if he had forgiven Eddie, he wrote: “What is there to forgive. When people are like that, it’s not personal. They’re just in their world.”
Pearl Jam without a drummer
Since Matt Cameron’s surprising departure, Pearl Jam is currently without a permanent drummer. The rumor mill is churning, a lot of prominent names are being discussed as possible successors, and Abbruzzese has also repeatedly appeared in speculation. The fact that he will, at least after this posting, seems even more unrealistic than before.
The fact is that many fans are currently enjoying his work on “Vs.” (1993) and “Vitalogy” (1994) are particularly appreciated; Quite a few not only consider him to be the best drummer in the band, but also write that Pearl Jam went downhill after he was kicked out.
What is at least noticeable is that in 2022 Abbruzzese posted drum videos on YouTube and other platforms in which he is currently performing PJ classics such as “Animal” – which he once recorded on the drums. Does he want to apply again?
