Martin Schindler failed early at the Darts World Cup in London after acute problems on the doubles fields.
The German number one almost threw a nine-darter in his opening game on Sunday evening (December 22nd, 2024), but lost 0-3 sets to the Englishman Callan Rydz in the second round.
“It’s difficult to explain. I felt like I wasn’t in control of the situation. It feels dirty”Schindler said disappointedly: “I missed an awful lot of darts on the doubles, even though I trained so much before the World Cup.”
Missed double twelve
Schindler only hit three of his 28 attempts at doubles. In the first sentence “The Wall” almost for the first German nine-darter Ally Pally.
After eight perfect darts, Schindler missed double twelve, which would have won the set. This was then won by Rydz, against whom Schindler had previously won all twelve games on the PDC tour.
Only a little resistance left
Rydz, who missed many doubles himself, marched on. The world number 43 won with a strong performance Scoring also the next two sentences, from world number 22. Schindler received little resistance.
Before Schindler, former semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens and debutant Kai Gotthardt were eliminated in the second round. For Niko Springer it was already over in lap one.
Anderson also out early
Two-time world champion Gary Anderson also suffered an early exit. The Scot lost 3-0 to the Swede Jeffrey de Graaf – and, like Schindler, had big problems hitting the double fields.
A rate of 15 percent (three out of 20) was not enough for the 54-year-old, but his competitor, who was 20 years his junior, consistently took advantage of the opportunities presented to him.
Pietreczko and Hempel have to go
On Monday, Ricardo Pietreczko and Florian Hempel will play for a place in the third round; they are the last two of the six participants from Germany. More had never qualified for the World Cup.
At the beginning of the evening session (from 8:10 p.m.), Pietreczko will face Dutch junior world champion Gian van Veen, after which Hempel will play against former top player Daryl Gurney from Northern Ireland.
