Darmstadt 98 extended with Lieberknecht: Best point average since Labbadia

Applies to 1st and 2nd league

Whether Torsten Lieberknecht’s first season as coach of Darmstadt 98 will be crowned with promotion to the Bundesliga is still open. Regardless of which league you belong to, one thing is already certain: The 48-year-old will continue to stand on the sidelines of the “Lilies” in the future. On Wednesday, the second division team announced the extension of the head coach’s contract until June 30, 2025.

“We brought Torsten on board last year with the conviction that we would take the next steps in the development of our team together and continue to consolidate our modern, active style of play. That was extremely successful, which is why it is only logical for us to continue on the path we have taken with him, regardless of the league. It is important to Torsten and all those responsible here not only to talk about continuity and identification, but to live it. That made the talks about an early extension easy and now gives the entire club important planning security,” said sporting director Carsten Wehlmann.

Before the start of the season, Lieberknecht had replaced Markus Anfang, who had moved to Werder Bremen, and led Darmstadt 98 into the top flight of the 2nd Bundesliga. With four games to go, the club is fourth with 51 points. On Saturday (8.30 p.m.) third-placed FC St. Pauli (53 points) can be overtaken in a direct duel. The 1.65 points that Lieberknecht gets on average per game is the best value for a Darmstadt coach since Bruno Labbadia (1.92 points from 2003 to 2006 in the Oberliga and Regionalliga).

“I felt very comfortable in the city and in the club from day one. My hopes and expectations of the club and my role here have been confirmed. Working with everyone in charge is very trusting and the way the club is lived in the city totally impresses me. I’ve emphasized several times that I want to work for a club for as long as possible if I identify with it. Since this is the case at Darmstadt 98, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to extend the contract,” said Lieberknecht about his signature.
