THE many benefits of dark chocolate have been ascertained several times by science, especially in the last ten years: it is rich in antioxidants which slow down the aging of the organism, has positive effects on cardiovascular health and helps keep blood pressure within limits. Dark chocolate, however, can reveal itself also a weapon against diabetesif taken without excess.
Dark chocolate to prevent diabetes

Confirmation came in recent weeks from a study conducted by Harvard University in the United States and Shanghai University in China. The researchers, starting from three large cohort studies conducted between 1976 and 1989 on almost 300 thousand nurses, noted that study participants who consumed 5 servings a week of dark chocolate had a 21% lower risk of getting diabetes. In contrast, milk chocolate not only did not have the same effect.

The results of the study also reveal the amount of dark chocolate consumed each week by nurses who have taken part in this large cohort study conducted by Harvard University together with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The recommended dose has been identified in 142 grams per weekequal to almost a 100 and a half gram bar.
However, even less is enough to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Study participants who ate any type of chocolate had a 10% lower risk of developing diabetes compared to those who, on the contrary, did not consume chocolate. The percentage, however, rose to 21% in subjects who, during the study, consumed 142 grams of dark chocolate in a week, also in this case compared to those who did not consume chocolate of any kind.
In order to maximize the benefits of dark chocolate and reduce sugar intake, however, it is recommended consume dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoathe most widespread type also in Italy, where it is possible to commonly find dark chocolate bars with higher percentages of cocoa, even 90-95%.
