Danill Medvedev defeats Nuno Borges and advances to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open | Sport

Danill Medvedev has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The third-seeded Russian defeated the Portuguese Nuno Borges in four sets in the fourth round. The set scores were 6-3 7-6 (4) 5-7 6-1.

Medvedev relied heavily on his serve – he hit thirteen aces – and took advantage of his opponent’s many mistakes. Medvedev managed to break the 26-year-old Portuguese six times in the match that lasted more than three hours.

Medvedev was already in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne in 2021 and 2022. The winner of the 2021 US Open did not get beyond the third round last year.

The 27-year-old Russian meets Pole Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals. The ninth-seeded Hurkacz won in the fourth round in three sets against the Frenchman Arthur Cazaux: 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3) 6-4. Cazaux, who participates in Melbourne on a wild card, was far too strong for Tallon Greekpoor in the third round.

Doubles specialist Koolhof ready

Wesley Koolhof was unable to qualify for the quarter-finals in the men’s doubles at the Australian Open. The 34-year-old Dutchman, together with Croatian Nikola Mektic, lost in the eighth finals to the second-seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna from India and Matthew Ebden from Australia.

Koolhof and Mektic were seeded fourteenth at the Melbourne Grand Slam. They defeated two veterans in doubles in straight sets: 6-7 (8) 6-7 (4). Bopanna is 43 years old and Ebden 36.

Koolhof plays his last Australian Open. At the end of last year he announced that 2024 will be his last year on the tour. He won Wimbledon last year with the British Neal Skupski and thus achieved his biggest goal: winning a Grand Slam tournament.
