Daniel Altmaier’s success story in Paris is over. In the round of 16, the tennis professional at the French Open. Now there is only one German in Paris.
Daniel Altmaier clearly missed the first move into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. The 26 -year -old tennis professional lost 3: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7) in Paris and retired in the round of 16 at the French Open. Altmaier had to give up after 2:18 hours.
This means that only Alexander Zverev is there of the nine German tennis professionals in Stade Roland Garros. The previous year’s finalist will deal with the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the fight for moving into the quarter -finals this Monday in the second game after 11:00 a.m. (Eurosport). Last year Zverev prevailed against Griekspoor in the Stade Roland Garros in the tie -break of the fifth set.
In the event of a progress, Zverev could lead to a duel with Novak Djoković in the quarter -finals. The record-Grand slam champion from Serbia meets the British Cameron Norrie in its round of 16.
Against Tiafoe, Altmaier could not build on his strong performance from the first three rounds. The German number two, who defeated the world ranking -fourth Taylor Fritz at the start, took a while to get going – the American already led 4-0. Altmaier then found his rhythm, the first set was gone after 35 minutes.
In the second round, Altmaier then met his opponent at eye level, but had to accept a break again for the 3: 4. Altmaier threw the racket onto the floor, hit a ball up into the air-the Davis Cup professional noticed that Tiafoe was not unbeatable that evening, but did not reach his top shape.
After a lost second set, Altmaier hammered the racket against his bank and then disappeared from the square for a few minutes to change the clothes. And the break seemed to him well, because in the third sentence he first determined what was happening. He took the surcharge twice, but both of them let him come back into the game and gave up his service himself. In the tiebreak, Tiafoe then had the better nerves and deservedly won.
Nevertheless, Altmaier can be satisfied with his performance in the Stade Roland Garros. It was only for the second time ever at a Grand Slam tournament in the round of 16, now approaches the top 50 in the world rankings.
Altmaier had announced that he wanted to be among the Australian Open in the coming year. To do this, he has to win under the top 32 – and games like against Tiafoe in Paris.
