The 71-year-old Babis is considered a close ally of Orban. Both of them belong to the far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE) faction in the EU Parliament. Babis, who originally comes from Slovakia, has been in power since mid-December in a coalition with two small parties on the right-wing edge of the political spectrum.
According to surveys, Orban is at risk of defeat in the parliamentary elections in Hungary on Sunday. Most polls see his challenger Peter Magyar’s Tisza party well ahead of Orban’s Fidesz party. In the EU, the right-wing populist Hungarian head of government is criticized for dismantling democracy and the rule of law.
