Van Aert has dominated the cyclocross season so far. In nine starts, he crossed the finish line eight times as the winner. After his victory on Wednesday (05.01.21) at the race in Herentals, the Belgian declared that he would only compete in the Belgian championships on Sunday and that he would then prepare for the road cycling season. He will then prepare for the spring classics as planned from the start, said van Aert in a message from his racing team Jumbo-Visma.
The Dutch cycling star Van der Poel had previously decided not to start at the World Cross Country Championship (January 29th to 30th). The four-time champion and defending champion declared his cancellation with persistent back problems. It is still unclear what impact the complaints will have on the classic season on the road.
“I haven’t reached the level I had hoped for since the tour because of the back pain. I just want to leave that behind. The only thing that can help is a longer break.”said van der Poel: “It would be unwise to interrupt this phase again. Not to defend my title is quite a blow, however.”
