The Fluvius signage was located a few meters along a green verge where works were in progress. There was also a mound of earth with remains on the parallel cobblestone strip between the cycle path and the road, which made it difficult for cyclists to avoid the signals on their right.

A few hours after the accident, an employee of the Ypres technical department came to install additional signage to warn cyclists and vehicles about soil on the cobblestone strip between cycle path and roadway.
