Cycling, Mohoric classy coup at the Vuelta Valenciana in Sanremo style

First victory of the season for the Slovenian champion (and gravel world champion) who won the Classicissima in 2022 with a crazy dive from Poggio. Lonardi second at 13″ leads the group, Tonelli still leader

What a beautiful runner, Matej Mohoric. And at 29 years old he certainly deserved a few more prestigious victories, he who has been predestined ever since he won the Junior World Championship in 2012 in Holland and the Under 23 World Championship in Florence in 2013 (and Mathieu Van der Poel won the junior title… ). In any case, his extraordinary ability as a downhill skier in the Poggio dive remains in our eyes, thanks to which he managed to triumph in via Roma in the 2022 Milan-Sanremo. And then Gualdo Tadino’s stage at the 2018 Giro, three at the Tour and one the Vuelta, the Tours of Germany and Poland, the gravel world championship in Italy in 2023. Mohoric is missing a great classic in the North, given that on the cobblestones and on the Walls he has always been a protagonist (4th in the Roubaix and 5th in the Liège -Bastogne-Liège).

Well. Today in the second stage of the Vuelta Valenciana in Mancomunitat de la Valldigna the first victory of the season arrived for Mohoric and his Bahrain Victorious with a coup in the last descent from the Corrals plateau. Mohoric, Slovenian from Kranj, made the difference in the dive which ended 1700 meters from the finish, and the group closed 13″, led by Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) on Simone Consonni (Lidl Trek), Filippo Fiorelli (Fv Bardiani), Davide De Pretto (Jayco-AlUla), and seventh Marco Tizza (Bingoal): Jonathan Milan (Lidl Trek) finished 86th at 4’25”. Alessandro Tonelli, the Brescian from Fv Bardiani-Csf Faizané, is still in the lead in the rankings with 1’08” right over Mohoric.

The words “I knew that the stage was for me and this didn’t intimidate me. I had already studied the ending during the team’s training camp”, explains a beaming Matej Mohoric, who with Pogacar and Roglic represents the symbol of Slovenian cycling. The Vuelta Valenciana will end on Sunday
