A new section of the bicycle highway between Assen and Groningen will be constructed next six months. This involves a 2-kilometre stretch over the Hooidijk between Eelde and Glimmen, right along the Noord-Willemskanaal.

The work consists of raising the sagging quay along the canal, removing the old road, supplying sand, and creating the new extra-wide concrete cycle path.

The construction of the bicycle highway is being done in combination with the necessary maintenance work by the Hunze and Aa’s water board on the Noord-Willemskanaal. New bank protection will be installed and culverts will be extended. Furthermore, the Oosterbroeksebrug will be closed in the summer for maintenance.

The costs of the work are more than 2 million euros. The quay increase will cost more than 500,000 euros and will be borne by Hunze and Aa’s. The cycle route costs around 1.5 million euros, paid for by the province of Drenthe.

The western quay along the Noord-Willemskanaal, between Groningerstraat in Eelde and Oosterbroekweg in Glimmen, is closed to traffic until mid-July. This section of the cycle route must be completed on July 18.
