After his girlfriend Urška Žigart fell badly on Thursday, cycling star Tadej Pogačar was now able to give the all-clear and also revealed what his partner wanted him to do.
Žigart had a serious fall during the women’s Tour de Suisse on Thursday. The Slovenian woman fell at high speed on an uneven stretch of road and suffered a broken jaw. There was also suspicion of a concussion.
The accident occurred around the time that Tadej Pogačar himself started the second stage of the Tour of Switzerland.
After his strong performance, the UAE star refrained from speaking to the media. However, on Friday, the 26-year-old spoke about his girlfriend’s health – and had good news.
“Everything is fine,” explained the Slovenian. “I visited her in the hospital yesterday after the stage. She was kept there overnight but will be discharged today. She is in good spirits.”
“She’s really a fighter”
The Tour de France winner was particularly impressed by his girlfriend’s mentality: “She’s really a fighter, very strong. That gives me additional motivation for the coming days.”
With a comfortable lead of 2:50 minutes, Pogačar leads the overall ranking of the Tour de Suisse. His girlfriend has already given him a clear message.
“She wants me to bring this jersey home and see her again as soon as possible – hopefully on Monday,” Pogačar said.
The Slovenian shaped the final of the second stage on Thursday. First he tried to enable his teammate Jhonatan Narváez to win the day before he finally had to pursue the breakaway himself. Despite the emotionally stressful day, Pogačar continued to extend his lead in the overall standings.
