The cycle path between Geeuwenbrug and Hoogersmilde has been overhauled since this week. The cycle path is shifted and hardened because the path was ready for replacement and was regularly flooded. This has to do with measures that Staatsbosbeheer takes to increase groundwater levels in the Drents-Friese Wold.

According to forester Lysander van Oossaanen, the flood of the cycle path has two causes. “From the past, many cycle paths have been laid on very nice, interesting places, such as over the heath or very close to penny. This cycle path was in two places along the Venrand.”

In addition, Staatsbosbeheer’s measures come to improve water levels in nature and to prevent drying out. “We want to retain the water that falls as much as possible, to raise the groundwater level. That means nature is getting wetter. For fens this is extremely good, but for cycle paths or other facilities it is slightly different. They can suffer from it if they are in the wrong place. That is the downside.”

The cycle path between Geeuwenbrug and Hoogersmilde is now partly divided. From today, concrete will be poured.

According to Van Oossaanen, the adjustments to the cycle path coincide with the wider plan to harden the main bicycle paths in Drenthe. “Of course it involves costs if you have to construct something new. But the main structure is increasingly made of concrete, for better cycling experience and less maintenance. And with less maintenance in the future it is a saving again.”

Due to the work, various routes in the area are diverted.
