A crowbar and a balaclava no longer belong to the contents of the backpack of an average burglar. De Moderne Boef does not even visit your house anymore, but increasingly comes in a completely different route: via the electronic highway. In this case we speak of cyber crime and we have to deal with that regularly in recent years.

This week four cyber criminals are in court in Assen. They will be arrested in December 2023 at a holiday park in Gasselternijveen on suspicion of Bankhelpdeskfraud. But how does this kind of criminals actually work?

When the police invade the holiday home in Gasselternijveen, the laptops run at full speed. As a so -called Bankhelpdesk employees, the men raised victims throughout the Netherlands, for thousands of euros. About one and a half tons would have been looted. The police come across this quartet by chance. An agent, who is also staying at the holiday park at that time, smells trouble and signales his colleagues. In addition to the laptops, they find a large amount of contact lists, bank cards and software with which people can be scammed online. Two cars, telephones and SIM cards are also seized.
