Cyber attack on Formula 1 driver portal

Formula 1 is stopping in Mexico this weekend. In this context, the FIA confirms a cyber attack – by fans of the premier class of motorsport.
On the sidelines of the Mexican Grand Prix, a spokesman for the International Automobile Federation Fia confirmed that there had been unauthorized access to an internal driver portal in the summer. Personal data of Formula 1 drivers was also affected.
The incident was triggered by a group of hackers who spoke out on social networks a short time later. According to their own statements, they wanted to use the attack to point out security gaps – without causing any damage. All three described themselves as Formula 1 fans.
“The FIA became aware of a cyber incident in connection with the driver classification website in the summer. Measures were taken immediately to secure the drivers’ data,” the association said.
According to consistent media reports, the hackers discovered that, among other things, data such as Max Verstappen’s passport information could potentially have been accessed. However, according to their own statements, they stopped their tests at this point and did not access sensitive information.
They informed the association about the discovered vulnerability at the beginning of June. The FIA reacted immediately, took the affected site offline and then worked with the hackers to improve security measures.
