Custom-made boats: Starting signal for the World Championships in Inclusive Sailing in Rostock

The world championship in inclusive sailing takes place in the Hanseatic city from Wednesday to Sunday. One person with a handicap and one person without will sit in boats specially made for this type of competition.

The World Championships were officially opened on Wednesday evening, the first races in Rostock’s sailing stadium (between Gehlsdorf and the western city harbor) will take place on Thursday. A total of 25 inclusive teams from seven nations are taking part. A number of well-known German sailors are also starting in Rostock and want to use their participation to encourage others to get on the boat and try out sailing themselves.

The World Championships are organized by the North German Regatta Club (NRV) from Hamburg in cooperation with the Association of Rostock Sailing Clubs and the Rostock Regatta Club. It is sailed according to the Bundesliga format, i.e. several short races on one day for each crew. “Sailing on the Warnow in the middle of Rostock is really great. We had plenty of spectators during training,” said Sven Jürgensen from the NRV.

Patroness Drese is hoping for a pull from the World Cup

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Sports, Stefanie Drese, has assumed the patronage. “The inclusive Sailing World Championship is an absolute top event in sport. It shows how successfully and naturally people with and without disabilities work together as a team and what enormous sporting achievements are possible. I sincerely wish that we could do other sports, including Promote and advance teams and competitions in this way,” said the SPD politician.

Twelve-time world champion Kröger

The most famous German World Championship starters include Mini Transat sailor Lennart Burke from Stralsund, three-time Paralympic medalist and three-time world champion Jens Kroker, two-time Paralympic medalist and world champion Sigmund Mainka, two-time Paralympic medalist, twelve-time world champion and first World Champion of the Inclusion World Championship for Sailing Heiko Kröger and Clemens Kraus, multiple World Championship medal winner and also World Champion.

As one of the all-women teams, Bundesliga sailor Silke Basedow from the Hamburger Segler-Club and Nadine Loeschke, who suffers from limited mobility in both legs and is a member of the sailing department at FC St. Pauli, set sail together.
