“Like an idiot”

The 15th stage of the Tour de France takes an inglorious end for Julian Alaphilippe – for special reasons.
Julian Alaphilippe provided a strange moment on the 15th stage of the Tour de France. The Frenchman already celebrated the stage victory at Carcassonne – although he only came across the line as third. Instead, the day’s victory went to Tim Wellens from Belgium, who prevailed as an outlier. Victor Campenaerts also crossed the finish line in front of Alaphilippe.
The two -time world champion Alaphilippe was previously involved in a fall. “Unfortunately, my radio was no longer working afterwards, so I tried to put on the best possible sprint and think about the stage victory. I put my hands like an idiot, but there were some boys in front of me,” Alaphilippe explained to French television according to the Belga news agency.
In the current race, Alaphilippe initially was unlucky: After the fall in the first half of the race, his shoulder had been exhausted, as he explained. But the 33-year-old was able to continue. “I remembered what had been done with me in the hospital and managed to get them back,” he said. His conclusion: “It could have turned out better, but I could have driven home too, so it’s okay.”
However, it is not the first time that Alaphilippe happens such a mishap. Already at the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2020, he cheered too early-and was intercepted by Slovenen Primoz Roglic. Jasper Philipsen also passed a similar mistake on the tour 2022.
The German driver Florian Lipowitz was also involved in the fall around Alaphilippe, but was able to continue the race without injury and unlock again to the main field.
