Düsseldorfer eG was once one of the most successful clubs in German ice hockey. Now he has to go to the 2nd league – because the wrong team prevailed in the playoffs.

Now it is official: Düsseldorfer eG will no longer play in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) in the coming season. Due to the rise of the Dresden Eislöwen, the first sporting descent of the DEG from the highest German ice hockey league is finally sealed.

Dresden prevailed in the seventh and decisive final game of the DEL2 playoffs against the Ravensburg Towerstars. The 2-1 win only fell in the extension-Tomáš Sýkora scored for the decisive goal. Bruno Riedl had previously achieved the lead for Dresden in the 22nd minute. Robbie Czarnik equalized for the hosts in the 56th minute.

If Ravensburg had become champion, the DEG could have stayed in the DE despite the sporting descent. Because, unlike Dresden, the tower stars do not meet the economic requirements for the ascent.

A new section is now beginning for the eight -time German champion. It was only on Friday that the traditional club explained that the coming two seasons – regardless of the league affiliation – were financially secured. Until then, there had hardly been any concrete planning for the DEL2.

The new managing directors Andreas Niederberger and Rick Amann are now facing a big task. In the next four months you will have to put together a completely new team and find a new trainer.

It is the first promotion to the DEL for the Eislöwen – and the first promoted one in 2022. At that time, the Löwen Frankfurt rose while the Krefeld penguins had to go into the DEL2. Since then, the Düsseldorf local rival has been in vain to return to the upper house.
