Cup holder Ajax Women eliminated in quarterfinals, VV Alkmaar after penalties

The KNVB Cup for women will have a new winner this year. Title holder Ajax Women was eliminated in the quarterfinals by leader FC Twente. In Enschede, the Tukkers won 2-1.

In the cup topper in the quarterfinals, the team of coach Suzanne Bakker started well. Nadine Noordam already had the perfect chance to score the opening goal after two minutes, but the bet went wide via a player from Twente. Tiny Hoekstra was then also close to the Ajax lead. Just before the break, keeper Lize Kop did her team a good service. After a handball from Quinty Sabajo, a penalty kick followed. Kop stopped Fenna Kalma’s effort with a great save.

In the second half, Ajax had more to fear for Twente, which took the lead in the 48th minute. Kalma put the home team at 1-0 and fifteen minutes later she managed to pass Kop again: 2-0. The second hit was one to frame, as her long shot flew into the intersection. Roos van der Veen brought back the tension just before time: 2-1, but Ajax Women did not get any further than that.

On March 4, Ajax Women will resume the competition with the following top poster. It will face Feyenoord in the Johan Cruijff Arena. The game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

VV Alkmaar

VV Alkmaar has reached the quarter finals of the cup with great difficulty. In the away match against DSS, penalties had to be decisive after a 1-1 score. DSS missed three of the six attempts, after which Ilvy Zijp shot coach Mark de Vries’ team to the next round.
