After the resignation of club icon Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace has presented a successor. Former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner signed a contract until 2026, reportedly with the option of another year with the Londoners.

According to reports, Glasner will be assisting in England, another former face from the Bundesliga, Emanuel Pogatetz. The 41-year-old, who was only hired as coach of the Young Violets Austria Vienna at the beginning of January, brings with him the experience of 116 Premier League games as a professional. For Glasner, however, it is the first stop outside of German-speaking countries.

Palace boss Steve Parish is said to have long resisted replacing Hodgson, who returned from retirement in March 2023. The 76-year-old’s health apparently no longer allowed him to continue working, which is why Hodgson, also in the interests of the club, drew a line on Monday (to the news). The coach, who once played there himself in the youth ranks, had previously looked after the South Londoners in 162 games from 2017 to 2021. The Eagles have only won three times in the English upper house since the beginning of November, most recently losing against Brighton (1:4) and Chelsea (1:3). Positioned in mid-table at the start of the season, Crystal Palace has moved ever closer to relegation.

Before Glasner, the capital club is said to have already asked talented trainer Kieran McKenna, who has been working successfully at Ipswich Town for a good two years. The 37-year-old, who was assistant coach at Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, José Mourinho, Ralf Rangnick and Michael Carrick before joining the 1981 UEFA Cup winners, did not want to move at the moment. In the second-tier Championship, Ipswich Town, as a newly promoted team in second place, is fighting for a direct entry into the Premier League.
